Advertisers Tap Brain Science - Wired News

By Randy Dotinga

02:00 AM May. 31, 2005 PT

Scientists are scanning brain activity in the hopes of catching sight of the physical mechanisms that determine whether you prefer Coke over Pepsi.

The nascent research, known as "neuromarketing," could one day lead to new advertising strategies that directly stimulate hard-wired mental reflexes rather than appealing to fuzzy consumer attitudes.

Chirac Names Iraq Invasion Critic P.M. - AP

By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer
Tue May 31, 5:25 PM ET

PARIS - President Jacques Chirac fired his prime minister Tuesday and built a new government around two men — one an unelected loyalist, the other an ambitious rival —who could one day fight to succeed him as France's leader.

Chirac's unlikely and potentially explosive pairing of Dominique de Villepin and Nicolas Sarkozy was a measure of the crisis Sunday's humiliating referendum defeat caused to his 10-year presidency.

The reply from voters — a strong "Non!" — was as much a repudiation of Chirac's domestic policies as it was a refusal of the proposed European Union constitution.

Villepin and Sarkozy are unnatural allies. Just last week, in thinly veiled criticism, Sarkozy said only people who have held elected office "have the right to speak in the name of France."

Villepin, 51, is a long-trusted aide who, as foreign minister from 2002-2004, passionately made France's case against the Iraq war. His political weakness is that he has never been elected to office. Chirac named him prime minister, promoting him from the Interior Ministry to replace the unpopular Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

AI Seduces Stanford Students - Wired News

By Kevin Poulsen

02:00 AM May. 31, 2005 PT

Psychologists and salesmen call it the "chameleon effect": People are perceived as more honest and likeable if they subtly mimic the body language of the person they're speaking with. Now scientists have demonstrated that computers can exploit the same phenomenon, but with greater success and on a larger scale.

Researchers at Stanford University's Virtual Human Interaction Lab strapped 69 student volunteers into an immersive, 3-D virtual-reality rig, where test subjects found themselves sitting across the table from a "digital agent" -- a computer-generated man or woman -- programmed to deliver a three-minute pitch advocating a notional university security policy requiring students to carry ID whenever they're on campus.

The urge to win - John Tierney, NY Times columnist

Published: May 31, 2005

After I wrote about research showing that women have less appetite for competition than men do, a number of women wrote to inform me that they're just as competitive as any guy. If the tone of their letters is any indication, I have no doubt they are.

Nor do researchers doubt that such women exist. As Danica Patrick showed in the Indianapolis 500, some women can successfully compete with men at the highest level. But why aren't there more of them?

Discrimination is one big reason, because men have traditionally made the rules to suit themselves and keep out women. But if you think that leveling the playing field would eliminate gender disparities, consider an unintentional experiment conducted in the Scrabble world, which is hardly a hostile environment for women.

Oliver Stone Gets Stung - E! online

By Marcus Errico
Tue May 31, 3:42 PM ET

Just when we thought things couldn't get much worse for Oliver Stone after Alexander stunk up the box office last fall comes this: The three-time Oscar winner is facing drug-possession and drunken-driving charges stemming from a weekend traffic stop.

Beverly Hills cops pulled over the 58-year-old movie maker's Mercedes around 11:30 p.m. at a checkpoint on Sunset Boulevard. The checkpoint was part of a statewide crackdown set up for Memorial Day weekend.

"During the course of the contact, Mr. Stone exhibited symptoms of possible alcohol intoxication," the Beverly Hills PD said in a statement. "As the result of additional investigation, Mr. Stone was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and possession of a controlled substance."

Slater was reportedly arguing with his girlfriend in the wee hours of the morning when he walked up behind another woman and firmly grasped her buttocks.

The woman flagged down police and reported the incident, pointing out Slater as the man who assaulted her.

Tips for photographing memorials - DotPhoto.com

1. Shoot the overall scene and be sure to include specific areas of interest. Your photo should have a distinct foreground, middle ground and background for maximum visual impact.

2. Grab some detailed shots of inscriptions, symbols and other interesting architectural elements.

3. Capture the emotion of the moment and include people interacting, reacting to and with the memorial.

4. Be aware of the location of the sun when taking your photo and use the angles and shadowing it casts to your advantage. For the best shots, photograph your memorial during early morning or late afternoon light.

Have a Happy Memorial Day!

This means that the security company does not know the content of this box that was shipped from the Philippine to Cote d' ivoire under a diplomatic coverage. My purpose of asking for your assistance boil down to the fact that I don't want my late husband's family to be aware or name involve. and the deposit statement of the box authorized the company to make this box avaliable for shipment on request only to my foreign bussiness representative, though unname.

Hence I want you to contact the the security company as my bussiness partner, after receiving the prove from me to enable the company release the consigment to you diplomatically, while I join you on the arrival of the box.I have paid all demurrage ,storage charges and the shipment fee, all you need do is to help me contact the security company and introduce yourself as my bussiness partner, requesting the shipment of the box. And as soon as Diplomatic shipping agent approved the shipment and tell you the arrival date of the box then I will join you to give you 20% of the money instantly before I go on with the proposed investment in your domain provided is secured and investment friendly. Please if you are interested and willing to represent me as my bussiness partner kindly write me as soon as possible.

I awaits your urgent response.
Best wishes,

Second Floor VCU Cabell Library Construction Project

The second floor of the James Branch Cabell Library is undergoing renovations that will enable it to shift some operations, which will permit it to store more of its crowded collections in high-density shelving. Users of the second floor group study room in particular may be distracted by the noise resulting from asbestos abatement and reconstructing some walls. We apologize for the disruption and suggest you try one of the other floors if it is too distracting. The construction work should be completed by July.

Did you know that Bruce Springsteen played at least five concerts at VCU?

Bruce Springsteen played numerous concerts in Richmond in the late 1960s/early 1970s beginning with a show in Monroe Park in the summer of 1969.

35 years ago, at his May 23, 1970 concert at the VCU Franklin Street gym with his band Steel Mill, VCU officials cut off the band's power when the band ran past the 11 p.m. curfew. This lead to their drummer getting arrested by police on disorderly conduct charges for continuing to play his drums.

A poll first: Majority say they'd vote Clinton for president

The Associated Press

(May 27, 2005) — WASHINGTON — For the first time, a majority of Americans say they are likely to vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton if she runs for president in 2008, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday.

The survey shows that the New York senator and former first lady has broadened her support nationwide over the past two years, though she still provokes powerful feelings from those who oppose her.

Clinton commands as much strong support - but more strong opposition - as George W. Bush did in a "Newsweek" poll in November 1998, two years before the 2000 election. She is in a slightly stronger position than then-vice president Al Gore, the eventual 2000 Democratic nominee, was in 1998.
