When will China answer for Tiananmen massacre? - USA Today editorial
The 16th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre passed Saturday with little attention. The only sizeable demonstration was in Hong Kong, where tens of thousands held a vigil. In the United States, a State Department spokesman called on China to account for those who died or disappeared in the "brutal and tragic" crackdown on pro-democracy students.
But by now, such diminishing protests have little impact. The reality is China's leaders can feel they got away with mass murder. Memories have faded of the drama that unfolded for weeks on the world's TV screens: of fresh-faced students camping out in makeshift tents on the square, erecting a replica of the Statue of Liberty, excitedly talking of democracy. And of how it all ended: with tanks of the People's Liberation Army moving in, guns blazing. Of how hundreds, perhaps thousands, were killed.
